The latest issue of Elle Magazine quotes a recent study that found that the strength of a woman’s stomach, back and hip muscles is especially important in preventing leg injuries. The study’s authors found that exercise such as pilates is good preventative medicine.

Hip Twist        Be certain to warm up before exercising. Read these important cautions
.1. starting position .2. begin to circumduct legs .3. legs at lowest point .4. complete circumduction .5. return to start
STARTING POSITION
Seated with weight back of sit-bones, lumbar (lower) spine slightly flexed or curved and thoracic (upper) spine is lengthened or straight.

Legs are straight in air, parallel and together with hips flexed as much as possible. Arms are straight behind back with palms on mat supporting torso, fingers pointing outward. Scapulae (shoulders) are stabilized.

EXERCISE
INHALE to prepare, then...

EXHALE stabilize pelvis, weight rolled slightly back of sit-bones, and begin to circle legs in one direction. Legs remain parallel and together through movement.

INHALE complete circle and return legs to starting position.

Complete 3-5 repetitions in each direction, alternating direction each time.

FOCUS
Spine in V-position lengthen thoracic (upper spine) but use abdominals to stay slightly back of sit-bones.

Allow hip flexors to lengthen as legs lower, avoid gripping and losing pelvic stability.

Slide scapulae down back to stabilize to avoid sinking into shoulders.

Maintain abdominal contraction to prevent pelvis from rotating or tilting forward

Engage transversus abdominis (lower abdominals) to keep abs from popping.
