Power Couple: To say Lindsay Merrithew and Moira Merrithew work out well together is both a pun and an understatement.
Not that long ago, the professionally trained actor and his wife, a former principal dancer with the City Ballet of Toronto, were slaving away at dead-end bar jobs just to pay the rent. In the late 1980s, after a foot injury forced Moira to hang up her pointe shoes, they scraped together $500 in tips to finance construction of a wooden pilates exercise machine. At the time, the idea was to help Moira train other dancers in what was then a relatively unknown stretching-and-strengthening regimen out of the couples cramped one-bedroom apartment in Torontos downtown core.

STARTING POSITION
Seated upright, pelvis and spine neutral. Legs long and adducted, feet flexed. Arms reaching out to sides, palms down, scapulae stabilized.
EXERCISE
To prepare, inhale...
EXHALE for 3 counts, rotating spine. Rotate maximally on first breath, lengthening and increasing rotation with next 2 breaths.
INHALE lengthen and return to center. Repeat to other side.
Complete 35 repetitions on each side.

STARTING POSITION
Seated upright, pelvis and spine upright. Pelvis facing square to one side, legs crossed. Upper torso rotated slightly toward pulleys. Arms held out in front of body, slightly rounded with both hands holding one strap directly in front of sternum, palms facing in. Scapulae stabilized.
EXERCISE
To prepare, inhale...
EXHALE maintain pelvis square to side, hands directly in front of sternum and rotate upper torso away from pulleys to move carriage out.
INHALE maintain pelvis square to side and return upper torso, controlling return of carriage.
Complete 5 repetitions on each side.
